The Tour
The Isle of the Dead tour takes you across the harbour to the cemetery island and gives you a fascinating insight into the lives and deaths of some of Port Arthur’s past residents. The tiny island cemetery holds the remains of over 1000 people; convict and free.
Join a guided tour to the island to hear the personal stories of convicts transported half way around the world, the soldiers who gave their lives to guard the prison, the men in positions of responsibility, and the families who followed them to the ends of the earth.
Cemetery History
Between 1833 and 1877 over 1000 people were buried on the Isle of the Dead. The island has two distinct burial sections; with convicts buried largely in unmarked graves on the low southern end, and the free and military burials marked by headstones up on the high northern end.
After 1850, some of the convicts ended up with headstones.

The Details
The tour departs several times daily except Christmas Day, and is subject to availability.
- The Isle of the Dead tour is conducted outdoors. There are no facilities or shelters on the island, so come prepared for all weather.
- Allow one hour return.
- This is an optional tour, requiring an additional entry ticket. Tickets can be purchased as part of Site Entry either online, at our Visitor Centre or from on board the harbour cruise.
